Codebreaker: Zone Refining

David Zirker, an intern in the Advanced Technology of Molten Salts group, will discuss his research of lanthanide separation from uranium via molten zone refinement, which has been performed at the Center for Advanced Energy Studies.

Current actinide recovery techniques, like molten salt electrochemical processing, aim to separate usable actinides from waste fission products, but they create a significant burden of waste products and introduce lanthanide contamination to recycled metallic fuel. Zone refining is an innovative approach to actinide recovery that seeks to rectify this problem.
