CAES launches Energy Frontiers Challenge initiative

Energy Frontiers Challenge is a new CAES initiative designed to accelerate energy innovation to solve the most pressing energy issues of our time. The application period for 2021 has ended. Stay tuned for details on 2022. Proposals should detail the research, planning and investment required to develop mid- to large-scale research teams that can lead to a CAES Center of Excellence (a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center, for example, or an Energy Frontier Research Center through the Department of Energy). Funding is for up to $50,000 for one year, with priority given to the following areas or energy frontiers (although all innovative ideas will be considered):

  • A Resilient Critical Materials Economy
  • Accelerating Energy Transitions
  • Advanced Manufacturing for Extreme Environments

The Energy Frontiers Challenge is structured to provide resources to catalyze transdisciplinary, multi-institution teams to pursue highly competitive funding opportunities and establish CAES Centers of Excellence that advance the energy field through convergent research approaches. This process also would further the educational mission of CAES' university members through research while transforming the collaboration upon which CAES thrives.
